Shepherding Program
Each of the twelve deacons “shepherd” our church members and friends of the congregation. This is done by maintaining contact via telephone, notes, cards, home visits, or contacts at church. In this way, the deacon learns of any special needs, either long term or temporary, when there has been an illness, death, or life-changing event in their lives, as well as family, health or church issues. With the Shepherding Program, church members and friends feel connected and an important part of the church family. Any conversations between the deacon and a member remain confidential, and information is shared with the pastor only with approval.
Stephen Ministry
Currently, Irondequoit
Presbyterian Church's Stephen Ministry program is inactive.
Please contact 266-3370 for additional
information.
Stephen Ministry is confidential Christian Care giving. It is one-on-one lay Christian care for anyone who is in need of a confidential, nonjudgmental, safe, listening ear. Like Stephen in the early church, our church realizes there are hurting individuals everywhere.
A Stephen Minister is not a professional counselor, but a spiritual friend who provides distinctively Christian care through process-oriented goals for care receivers, with Jesus at the center of the relationship and God as the cure giver.
Our Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training to equip them to provide support to people in crisis or to those who wish to share any life circumstance - past, present or future. These highly trained individuals are here and ready to help people through the difficult times in their lives.
Stephen Ministry is YOUR ministry. It is an important way we at Irondequoit Presbyterian Church care for one another. It is not just for “big” crises, but for little ones as well!
Stephen Ministers are available when you are going through a difficult time. Many times the little things can really add up. Don’t wait until you have a really big crisis; consider Stephen Ministry if the little things have you feeling down.
If you are going through a difficult time, consider having a Stephen Minister. If you know someone else who is facing difficulties, suggest that they request Stephen Ministry.
Food Cupboards
We collect non-perishable food items every Sunday and deliver the food to two local food cupboards; The Community Food Cupboard of Rochester and the Irondequoit Community Cupboard. Your food donations can be dropped off in the hallway outside the chapel. Many of our members donate their time either in transporting the donations or actually working at the food cupboards from time to time. Typical items we collect are: tuna fish, canned vegetables, canned fruit, pork and beans, toilet tissue, hand soap, and one pound bags of rice. A different item is asked for each week and that item can be found in the church newsletter.
Cameron Community Ministries
Cameron Community Ministries, Inc. is an ecumenical urban community center located in the Rochester, New York, Lyell-Otis Neighborhood, which is an area of high poverty. Cameron provides programs for neighborhood residents through volunteers and staff that give 1) school-age children and their families educational and recreational experiences to build life-skills and positive values in a structured, safe and nurturing environment, 2) meals to the hungry, and 3) clothing to those in need. Cameron’s service to the neighborhood demonstrates respect for the dignity of all persons.
Eastern Service Workers Association
ESWA is a self-help, all-volunteer membership association made up of Monroe County's working and unemployed poor. It was founded in Rochester in 1976 by low-income service workers and their families, who banded together with concerned community residents to address survival needs and build permanent solutions to their poverty conditions. The association's 11-point benefit program of emergency and supplemental food, clothing, legal advice and information, preventive medical care and non emergency dental care, job referral, and other assistance is available to members free of charge.
Irondequoit Presbyterian supports ESWA through members volunteering in their office and through the collection of clothes for Eastern Services Workers Association. Sometimes as the seasons continue we find other things that we no longer want. We call this collection "JOE'S Closet" and there are containers on the mezzanine for men's, women's and children's clothing. If you need help with the clothing contact Carolyn Hinchman via the church email.
In the
July, August and September timeframe, we collect
school supplies for ESWA. From time to time, we also provide financial support in the form of special offerings.
Hurricane Katrina Relief - Our Mission Trips to Gulfport, Mississippi
This has
truly been an amazing effort! The Gulfport Mission
Team has included members from both Summerville
and Irondequoit Presbyterian Churches. This last
spring (2008) was our third trip to Gulfport. We
are planning on another trip in the spring of
2009. Plans are not finalized at this time. On
average the team numbered 20 people of many ages.
We are all truly blessed to have met such loving
and caring
people while God watched over our ministry in Gulfport.
Our family at Westminster Presbyterian Church (our partner church in Gulfport) has asked us to share the message of all that has been done and what CAN be done with our help. They have serious needs for skilled labor to help those who may not be able to obtain funding through normal channels. We hope to continue to share the word with you in the weeks and months to follow
God Bless you for supporting us in this mission.
Meals on Wheels
We have members who volunteer to deliver hot, nutritious meals to elderly and homebound individuals.
One Great Hour of Sharing
The “One Great Hour of Sharing” offering is an annual event from which the monies collected are shared among several assistance programs:
36% are used locally, nationally and world-wide for the Presbyterian Hunger Program
32% are sent to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program
